NEW!! A CONCERT REVIEW BY NEW YORK MUSIC DAILY:
Kjersti Kveli: Counterintuitive Tunesmith, Powerful Voice, Great Band
- by delarue
“This song is about sacrificing people,” Kjersti Kveli laughed as
she told the crowd at the Triad Theatre on the Upper West Side Friday night.
Nervous laughter echoed back at her. “That’s what it’s about,” the
Norwegian-American songwriter/bandleader responded matter-of-factly – and
laughed again. Then midway through the broodingly crescendoing minor-key waltz – the title track to her latest album Release the Virgin – her bandmate Nicole Camacho fired off a sudden cadenza on her bass flute just as Kveli’s voice finally rose toward a scream. The effect was spine-tingling.
them. She also recorded this show, so she’s got a good live album to put out if
she sees fit. In the meantime, she’s giving the subscription model a shot, sort
of a Kickstarter where you get a new single from her over the next year every
time she records one.

Recommendations / Anbefalinger:
The unknown sister of Joan Baez og Joni Mitchell
There are plenty of women in New York with pretty voices, toting acoustic guitars; Kveli’s ability to shift seamlessly between genres, not to mention her fantastic band, puts her a cut above most of them.
A fantastic and versitile vocalist
A vocalist with a stark ability to evoke tons of emotion packed into a single verse. - Matthew Forss (Inside World Music)

Amazing Support for
The Cow-Call Project
Ljom has received overwhelming amounts of support. From Norsk Kulturråd, a national grant system we were granted as much as 100.000 Norwegian Kroners! In addition we have also received beautiful financial support from local organizations such the Municipality of Snåsa, the Historic Society in Snåsa and the Local Grant "Karin og Torbjørn Jørstads Gavefond". With all of this support, we will be able to do almost EVERYTHING we plan to do in 2014, including a tour of Norway, some dates in Sweden and Denmark, and then also with maybe some extra support, we will travel to the US to visit Norwegian Festivals and Churches. We are VERY exited to finally share our findings of historic Cow-Calling melodies that were used in the mountains in Snåsa, mostly before 2nd world war. For more info on this, visit our page: www.ljom.net
RELEASE DATE: June 13, 2014 - Label: Kirkelig Kulturverksted (www.kkv.no)
Cultural Grant from The American Scandinavian Society in New York
The American Scandinavian Society has been around for 114 years, for the comfort and joy of all Scandinavian Americans in New York City. Every year they provide cultural grants for one representative of each scandinavian country and one for the US as well, and this year I am one of the lucky recipients! Representing either Norway or America, not sure which. This photo is from their first banquet! Isn't that interesting!? - I am very very grateful for their support and trust in what I do. I hope to continue connecting the bridges between Scandinavia and America through music and art.
Thank you! American Scandinavian Society!

Award Prize "Karin og Torbjørn Jørstads Gavefond"
I was very surprised and happy to get the news about this prize that was so generously awarded me.
Here is my sister, Heidi Mari, with my HUGE check.
The money will go straight into paying the musicians for playing on the album.
Thank you angels for looking after me!
A happy complaint
Our Neighbors are luckily not too unhappy with our practicing in the building.
Now that is Lucky.
The first gig of 2013 - we LOVE LIC Bar!
The First Concert with the KK GROUP
happened at LIC Bar in Long Island City, on the 18th of February. We enjoyed this evening very much. Free Food and Music, good company and lost of smiling faces. That's joy right there. We thank you all for supporting us, and hope to see you soon again.
Grant from The Composers Fund
Imagine my surprise (and my somewhat nervous reaction) when I found out I've been granted 25 000 NOK from Komponistenes Vederlagsfond! This is money for me to write and create a concept album based on my own abstract poetry. The creation will be more in the realm of my alter ego who likes to consider herself a performance artist: Cochlea Freedom, but in a tight collaboration with the singer/songwriter in me, as well as with the experimental blogger-band Cochlea Freedom Ensemble.
Most of the poetry is written byt m, and after getting the grant I already have 5 scetches for pieces ready!! Yes, I was THAT exited about this!
It also helps my process of writing a longer piece for the NeoLIT Ensemble, which will be having its world premiere in NYC in May 2013. More info soon.
